London Underground

The London Underground (also known simply as the Underground or by its nickname the Tube) is a rapid transit system serving Greater London and into adjacent counties.

The Underground started life as the Metropolitan Railway, the world's first underground passenger railway. Opening on 10 January 1863.

It consists of 11 lines; Bakerloo line, Central line, Circle line, District line, Hammersmith & City line, Jubilee line, Metropolitan line, Northern line, Piccadilly line, Victoria line, and  Waterloo & City line which run for 250 miles in total and carry nearly 300 million people each year in and around the country's capital. Surprisingly only 45% of the Underground is actually underground.

Design: The Aesthetics associated with London Underground have become synonymous with British design. The tube map came second in a BBC and London Transport Museum poll asking for a favourite UK design icon of the 20th century. And the Underground's red, blue and white roundel has evolved over the years but has essentially remained the same since it's inception and is so well recognised that with or without text it is identifiable.
